Last month, the Express reported that over 8 billion passwords were leaked online in a recent data breach by hackers. A text file, that was uploaded to the web, contained a total of 8.3 billion passwords! The breach is being dubbed ‘Rock You 2021’ and will undoubtedly affect people across the globe.
So, what can you do to check your password security today?
Here are our 5 top tips…
- When was the last time you changed your passwords? Try and update them every three months to keep them fresh
- Make your passwords stronger. They should be at least 12 characters long and should include numbers, symbols and capital letters
- Randomly generate new passwords – Apple and Google can both help you do this. This will make your passwords extra strong and you can keep a log of them all by using a password manager
- Don’t forget to use two-factor authentication. It’s annoying when you have to receive a text message to get into accounts, but it’s a lot better than being hacked
- Login using Google when surfing the web. Lots of platforms let you access content by logging in via Google
